Dear Parents, Players and Coaches,
Hope you are excited about the upcoming 2016 CalChess State Scholastic Chess Championship that is happening on Saturday, March 19 and/or Sunday, March 20, 2016 at the Santa Clara Convention Center. We are expecting around 800 enthusiastic players to participate in THE BIGGEST tournament of the year in Northern California!
This is the LAST CALL before we will start charing late fee for the registration, so please go online NOW and register to avoid additional cost.
Also, the cut off dates for guest rooms at special group rates at three different hotels around the Convention Center are coming up soon, so please go to www.bayareachess.com/states and scroll down for the list of hotels and reservation links.
We are working hard to make sure that this year's event will run smooth and safe.
Some of the areas that we are improving from last year:
Online Pairings and standings - one of the most important areas I wanted to improve from last year is how we post the pairings and standings. This year we will be posting it online, and only 5-10 mins after that on the wall. The online posting have been tested and working good. We have also added a bit more time between rounds so that this can be done on a timely manner.
Special FUN Events - we are bringing back GM Chirila to do a clocked simul, but we are putting more special events like lectures, iPad demos, face painters, and perhaps a photo booth, to make sure that kids have a great time:) We are also having a large vendor selling chess goodies for your convenience.
Quicker Trophy ceremony - trophies has been ordered and made sure that we have everything correct and in line. :) no more embarrassing moments hopefully :) We have also developed a bit different process to ensure a smoother run of the trophy ceremony.

How to select your Section?
Step 1: Select your Grade: K, Grade1-3, Grade 4-6, Grade 6-8, Grade 9-12
Step 2: Get your rating: Look it up at USCF - Click HERE.
Not a USCF member? Then the player's rating is unrated.
K, Grade 1-3, Grade 4-6:
unrated --> Rookie section
rated under 500 --> Beginner Section
rated 500-799 --> Junior Varsity Section
rated over 800 --> Championship section
Grade 6-8:
unrated, or rated under 800 --> Beginner section
rated 800-1199 --> Junior Varsity section
rated over 1200 --> Championship section
two Championship sections: Grade 4-5 and Grade 4-6: students in Grade 4&5 can chose between the two, no restriction on which one they chose.
Grade 9-12:
unrated, or rated under 800 --> Beginner section
rated 800-1599 --> Junior Varsity section
rated over 1600 --> Championship section
