News on all Math Olympiad Classes

with the amazing Mr. G

** Just Added ** Grade 1-3 - Mondays 5-6pm **
Grade 4-6 - Division E (Mon 6-7:15pm)
Grade 6-8 - Divison M (Mon 7:15-8:30pm)

Dear Parents,

We had an amazing first week of Math Olympiad Classes this past Monday.

Here is Mr. G's weekly newsletter update to the parents who registered their child:

The 6:00 students (grades 4-6) were really engaged.  I had participation from start to finish, and everyone got involved.  Even when we covered the most difficult problem (#3 -- the DERT formula), the kids were paying attention and jotting down notes.  I was impressed that the students were that excited and willing to learn right off the bat.

The 7:15 students (grades 6-8) were very respectful.  That class has a totally different vibe: it's quiet, calm, almost serious; the kids really want to learn and were quite focused on doing so.  I will work in the coming weeks to get them used to my teaching style so that they feel comfortable offering possible answers to questions they don't know.

In both cases, behavior was good: we had no timeouts, and everyone earned their snack (and hopefully enjoyed it as well).

Please encourage your kids to complete the corresponding homework problems this week.  Homework reinforces what was learned, and the best time to do it is right after class (if they aren't too tired) or the next day.  In addition to building student confidence, homework also assists me in seeing what concepts haven't been fully mastered, so please make sure they complete it.  For the 6:00 class, they should attempt #1-4 and can try the Bonus if they wish.  For the 7:15 class, they should try #1-2 and the Bonus.
For now, I'd like to thank each of you for giving Math Olympiads a try.  Please talk to your child and ask them what they thought of the first class.  If they enjoyed it, they are much more likely to learn and improve, which is of course the whole point.  I will do everything I can to keep them motivated!

It's NOT TOO LATE TO JOIN! please email us if you would like to join, and we can prorate you the classes and we can also send you the homework packet. Please, spread the news and let us know if you have any questions.

Want a teaser? Check our the pictures and videos of the first class of Division E on our facebook page.

We've had several parents ask us about a possible class for their children in grades 1-3.  Normally Mr. G. does not teach this grade level because Math Olympiads problems are geared towards students in grades 4-8, but we are considering a separate class for younger kids.  Here's how this would work:

1) The class would start at 5:00 at BayAreaChess on Mondays. This is the only time that works with Mr. G's current schedule.
2) Instead of 75 minutes, this class would be for one hour (75 minutes is a long time for younger students to sit through an after school math class.)
3) At least for the first couple of classes, parents will need to be there to help me oversee classroom dynamics.
4) Students in this class must be advanced in math for their age, OR must not be put off by learning concepts that are typically reserved for kids several grades higher.  We want to make sure that any child who participates is not scared of math!!  You know your child best, so we would need to make contact with each parent to find out if this class is something they would enjoy.

We will be offering a trial class this coming Monday, September 24.  You can give it a try and not have to enroll until after the first class so that you can discuss it with your child first and see if it's a good fit.

Thank you for reading, and we look forward to meeting many of you soon!

Mr. Dan Gertmenian and Judit & the BAC Team
