Dear Good People,
We look forward to welcoming you next weekend (March 13-15) at the Santa Clara Convention Center (5001 Great America Pkwy, Santa Clara, CA 95054 (map)!
If you have not registered, please register online at BayAreaChess.com/my/states/ before late fees go up.
Please take a moment to read it this email because it will answer most questions. If you plan to get upset at anyone at the tournament, please make sure that it is me, Salman Azhar. Remember, we have access to the top tournament sites because others know chess folks to be “good people.” So, please set a positive example for everyone
and maintain a worthy role model for all our children.
- A few parents have asked us to postpone this event due to COVID-19. We have reviewed the situation carefully and are taking the lead from the Santa Clara authorities.
- We are unable to postpone the event due to the lack of availability of venues during this academic year.
- We do not anticipate that it will be necessary to cancel the event, but will inform you as soon as possible if that changes.
- As you may be aware, there have been noted cases of COVID-19 in Santa Clara County and the County has been monitoring the situation carefully. We recommend that you review the latest information at SantaClaraConventionCenter.com. BayAreaChess cannot make any guarantees and we encourage you to use your best discretion regarding attendance, especially if you, or your family members, are in a high-risk group.
- You may cancel using forms.gle/pHPcoR9LL53F1p3W6 ($10 fee if you cancel by 3/7). Please see BayAreaChess.com/events/20/states/#fees for changes/cancellation/refund policies.
- After you register:
- Please check the processed entries at BayAreaChess.com/events/20/03states.
- If you registered AFTER the last updated timestamp, your name will be in the next update.
- Byes: Check/request/change any 1/2-point byes (max two) before the start of the first game in your section. You will unable to request/change 1/2-point byes after your section starts but you may get 0-point byes if you want to miss any game without being forfeited. Please use forms.gle/pHPcoR9LL53F1p3W6 , let us know in advance if you can't make it to any of the rounds or to the tournament so we don’t have to forfeit your child.
- A $ next to your name implies fees due that must be paid ASAP. Please pay at BayAreaChess/payhere via CC or bring cash onsite.

- Before you come:
- Please plan to arrive by 8:30am.
- The tournament area is about 4 minutes’ walk from the parking lot.
- Please bring chess clocks if you have them. We will provide sets and boards.
- Please do not bring/consume outside food in the Convention Center. The Convention Center does not allow outside food. We are fined for anyone seen eating or any evidence of food consumption left. Eating outside or in your
vehicle is allowed.
- When you come:
- Please proceed to the Hall A near the center of the convention center.
- All 1-day sections are scheduled in Hall A-3 (9am to ~5:30pm).
- All 2-day sections are scheduled in Hall A-2 (9:15am to ~6pm).
- Parents and waiting area is assigned in Hall A-1 (awards at 5:45-7:45pm).
- Blitz and Bughouse is in Hall A-2 from 6 to ~8pm (Friday and Saturday, respectively).
- The round times & time controls are at BayAreaChess.com/events/20/states/#scheduleSummary.
- The pairings will be online on the day of the tournament at BayAreaChess.com/live/states.
- The TDs are responsible for enforcing the following rules:
- + No use of cell phone during the games
- + No talking inside the tournament hall while games are in session
- + No interaction between players in an active games.
- We will submit it for rating to USCF ASAP after the tournament, and post the results with a link at http://bayareachess.com/ratings-results-photos/.
